What is Biofertilizer?

Biofertilizer is a natural product containing living microorganisms (tiny helpful bacteria, fungi, or algae) that help plants grow better. When applied to seeds, soil, or plants, these microorganisms increase nutrients available to the plants — especially important nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Biofertilizers are NOT chemicals.
They are natural and eco-friendly and improve soil health without harming the environment.

Examples of common biofertilizers:

  • Rhizobium (helps legumes like beans, peas fix nitrogen from the air)

  • Azospirillum (for cereals like rice and wheat)

  • Azotobacter (for non-legumes)

  • Mycorrhiza (fungi that help roots absorb phosphorus)

  • Blue-Green Algae (BGA) (help rice fields)

How Biofertilizer Helps Crops

  • Fixes Nitrogen: Certain bacteria pull nitrogen from the air and convert it into a form plants can use (natural fertilizer!).

  • Solubilizes Phosphorus: Some microorganisms make phosphorus more available in the soil.

  • Improves Root Growth: Roots grow bigger and healthier, absorbing more water and nutrients.

  • Fights Bad Elements Naturally: Some biofertilizers also help protect crops by:

    • Producing natural antibiotics that kill harmful bacteria or fungi.

    • Outcompeting bad microbes for space and food in the soil.

    • Strengthening the plant’s own natural defense system.
